Fucus is a brown alga and it belongs to the division Phaeophyta. The thallus is flattened and small cavities called cryptostomates are scattered on the surface of the thallus. These cryptostomates have sterile hairs that help in the uptake of nutrients from the seawater. Fucus plant is a dioecious plant in which male and female plants are separate. Male and female gametes are formed in the conceptacle. Female gametes are denser than male gametes so they sink to the bottom and are attracted by sperm cells that will be motile.
