Peristalsis is a wave-like contraction and relaxation of muscles that cause the movement of food along the alimentary canal. The undigested, unabsorbed substances called faeces enter into the caecum of the large intestine through the ileocaecal valve, which prevents the backflow of the fecal matter. It is temporarily stored in the rectum till defaecation.
