During photosynthesis in plants, ATP is synthesized by ATP synthase with the help of a proton gradient created in the lumen through the membrane of the thylakoid and into the chloroplast stroma. ATP synthase consists of two main subunits: FO and F1. This has a rotational motor mechanism allowing for ATP production. The F1 part that is involved in ATP synthesis is located at the stromal side of the thylakoid membrane.
