During gamete formation characters segregate. Pure-breeding parents give rise to $\mathrm{F}$, with heterozygous conditions $\mathrm{F}_2$ generation is produced only by selfpollination of heterozygotes, that results in all possible recombinations of characters in progeny as mating is random.
