Pinus is a gymnosperm which produces cones bearing the male and the female reproductive gametes. The male cones are smaller and are found on the lower branches of the tree and the female cones larger than the male cones are on the upper branches of the same tree. Therefore the cones occur on the different branches of the same plant.
