The correct answer is:
acts as an oxygen scavenger
Leghaemoglobin is the result of a symbiotic association between plants and bacteroids. The major role of it is to provide enough amounts of oxygen to bacteria for respiration as well as protect the nitrogenase enzyme from denaturation when exposed to the atmospheric oxygen. The leghaemoglobin absorbs or binds oxygen so that there is no amount of free oxygen left in the nodule and supplies this oxygen to the nodule bacteroids.
