In the wastewater treatment process, the primary effluent is passed into aeration tanks for the secondary treatment. This is also called as biological treatment. The aeration tanks are constantly agitated and the air is pumped; this allows for vigorous growth of aerobic microbes which help in the treatment. Such microbial growth is called flocs which form a mesh due to the association of fungal filaments with bacteria.
