The correct answer is: Cl2 and H2
In the electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride with inert electrodes, the products obtained at anode and cathode respectively are Cl2 and H2.
The solution contains four ions Na+,Cl-,H+,OH.
Following reaction takes place:
At cathode
Na+aq+e-Nas;ENa+/Na-=-2.71V2H2Ol+2e-H2g+2O-Haq;EH2O/H2o=-0.83V
At anode
2Cl-aqCl2g+2e-;ECl-/Cl2o=-1.36V2H2O2lOg+4H+aq+4e-;EH2O/O2o=-1.23V
EH2O/H2o>ENa+/Nao. is formed at cathode.
Whereas EH2O/O2o>ECl-/Cl2o. So, formed at anode.
