The correct answer is:
X= Repressor, Y= Inducer , Permease, Transacetylase
The lac operon (lactose operon) is an operon required for the transport and metabolism of lactose in Escherichia coli and some other enteric bacteria. It has three adjacent structural genes, lacZ, lac Y, and lac A. With lactose in the cell, inducer (Y) lactose binds to the repressor (X). This causes a structural change in the repressor, and it loses its affinity for the operator. Thus, RNA polymerase can then bind to the promoter and transcribe the structural genes. E1, E2 ,E3 represent B galactosidase, permease and transacetylase (they are synthesized from structural genes, lacZ, lacY, and lac A, respectively)
