Restriction enzyme cleaves the DNA at certain sites creating fragments of DNA. This mechanism is used by bacteria to prevent any infection from foreign DNA. Methylase enzyme adds methyl groups to the bacterial DNA in order to prevent the destruction of its own DNA by restriction enzymes. This prediction was confirmed in 1963 by Stuart Linn and Arber when they isolated the enzyme methylase which was previously known as modification enzyme.
