The Government of India introduced in 1980 the concept of Joint Forest Management (JFM), to work closely with the local communities for protecting and managing the forest; in return for their services to the forest, the communities get the benefit of various forest products (like fruits, medicines, rubber, gum, firewood, etc.) and thus the forest is protected sustainably.
