mRNA is polycistronic in prokaryotes and monocistronic in eukaryotes.
Eukaryotic mRNA doesn't need to be polycistronic, one gene for one polypeptide is viable, however with prokaryotic organisms, it's sensible and economical that all functionally related proteins are synthesised together.
