Pituitary hormones gonadotrophins i.e. FSH and LH control menstrual cycle in females. FSH is a follicle-stimulating hormone and its main function is to control the development and maturation of ovarian follicles. LH is luteinizing hormone that causes formation of corpus luteum after ovulation has taken place. Ovarian hormones progesterone and estrogen secreted by corpus luteum also play an important role in the menstrual cycle. Progesterone is also important as it prepares the endometrium for implantation by secreting secretory glands. Estrogen develops secondary sexual characters.
