Experiments Result / Observation / Inference
Joseph Priestley A burning candle if placed in a bell jar, soon gets extinguished. A mouse if placed in a bell jar, soon gets suffocated. When a mint plant in the same bell jar, mouse stayed alive and also the candle continued to burn. Conclusion : Both burning candle or animals that breathe the air damage the air while the plants restore to the air.
Jan Ingenhousz He used a similar setup as the one used by Priestley and placed the aquatic plants once in the sunlight and then in the dark. Inference : Sunlight is essential for photosynthesis and only the green part of the plants could evolve oxygen.
Julius von Sachs He provided evidence for production of glucose when plants grow. Glucose is usually stored as starch. His later studies showed that the green substance in plants is located in special bodies within plant cells. Green parts in plants is
where glucose is made, and that the glucose is usually stored as starch.
T.W. Engelmann He used a prism to split light into its spectral components and then illuminated a green alga, Cladophora. This alga was placed in a suspension of aerobic bacteria (to detect the sites of O 2 evolution). First action spectrum of photo- synthesis was known.
