A mutation occurs when a DNA gene is damaged or changed in such a way as to alter the genetic message carried by that gene.

It is possible to induce mutations artificially through the use of chemicals or radiations (like gamma radiations), and selecting and using the plants that have the desired character as a source in breeding – this process is called mutation breeding.
