Stretches of single-stranded DNA used to detect the presence of complementary nucleic acid sequences by hybridization are called DNA probes. They are usually labelled with radioisotopes, epitopes, biotin or fluorophores to enable their detection. Radioactive DNA probes can be detected using autoradiography and they are used to identify mutations.
