Let us assume that,

  y= tan 1 [ 1+ x 2 1 x ]

Put :   x=tanθ

 1+x21x=1+tan2θ1tanθ=secθ1tanθ=1cosθsinθ=2sin2θ22sinθ2cosθ2=tanθ2

 

On differentiating with respect to x:

  y= tan 1 ( tan θ 2 )= 1 2 θ= 1 2 tan 1 x dy dx = 1 2 . 1 1+ x 2 .
