Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a hydrocarbon solvent and a fusogen, that attaches cell membranes. PEG is widely used in the induction of cell fusion between plant protoplast and in the production of animal cell hybridoma. During fusion the genetic material gets tranferred between the cells.
