Four major causes of biodiversity loss include - habitat loss and fragmentation, overexploitation, alien species invasion and co extinction. Co-extinction means when a certain species become extinct the plants and animals dependent on it also become extinct. Introduction of African catfish in a river for a purpose of aquaculture and of Nile perch into Lake Victoria is an example of Alien species invasion wherein certain species are introduced intentionally or unintentionally, resulting in the decline or extinction of indigenous species.
