The living plant tissue which has irregular thickenings is called collenchyma. The thickenings are made up of pectin between the cells. Thus there is no free intercellular space. In a dicot stem, the hypodermis, consists of a few layers of collenchymatous cells and it provides mechanical strength to the young stem. In monocot stem the hypodermis is sclerenchymatous. It is absent in roots.
