Interatomic distance in hydrogen H2 molecule LH2=74 pm and interatomic distance in chlorine Cl2 molecule LCl2=198 pm . Atoms linked by one σ -bond, covalent radius r=Interatomic distance2 . Therefore covalent radius of hydrogen rH=LH22=742=37 pm and that of chlorine rCl=LCl22=1982=99 pm

As H 2 g + Cl 2 g  2HCL g

Therefore bond length of HCl molecule LHCl

=rH+rCl=37+99=136 pm.
