Vectors are gene carriers used in genetic engineering. A vector must be able to replicate (thus requires the origin of replication), easily identifiable in order to select the transformed cells (thus requires selectable marker) and easily cleavable into fragments to add foreign DNA (thus requires presence of sites for restriction endonucleases).
