In the Wurtz reaction alkanes are prepared by the reaction of alkyl halides and sodium metal. The sodium metal is highly reactive, hence, we have to select a solvent which will not react with the sodium metal. It requires an aprotic solvent as the medium of the reaction. Dry ether is good aprotic solvent.
