A periderm is a group of cylindrical tissues that forms a protective layer and cover the stems and roots of many plants during the secondary growth. These tissues are usually found in perennial plants and consist of three different layers, the phelloderm (inner surface of the cork cambium), the phellogen (meristematic tissue called the cork cambium) which gives rise to the periderm and the phellem which is the suberized cells.
