The flower of the angiosperm plant can be categorized depending on the arrangement of the whorls around the gynoecium.

Epigynous flowers have the ovary is in the inferior position as the thalamus surrounds the ovary and may even fuse with it. The other whorls develop over the thalamus. This arrangement is shown by guava, cucumber and ray florets of sunflower.

If the ovary position is above the thalamus, that is superior to other whorls, the arrangement is called hypogynous. Mustard, brinjal develop such flowers.

When the gynoecium and other whorls are arranged almost at same level, the flower is called perigynous and ovary position is considered half inferior. Peach plant has such type of flower arrangement
