This reaction takes place at 500 - 800 K

At this temperature, the iron ore is in a solid state and the carbon monoxide is a gas. The coke burns in the lower part of the furnace to produce carbon monoxide, which rises through the furnace and reacts with the iron ore in the upper part of the furnace.
