The plasma membrane is the outermost boundary of the cell and it is selectively permeable. It regulates the movement of substance within a cell. The most accepted model regarding the structure of the plasma membrane is the fluid mosaic model, which was first proposed in 1972. According to this model, the plasma membrane components are arranged in a mosaic pattern and primarily made up of phospholipids, cholesterol, and proteins that move freely by showing fluidly.
