The cortical nephrons are mainly responsible for the concentration of the urine. The glomeruli, PCT, DCT, loop of Henle, are limited to the cortex in the cortical nephrons, whereas in the juxtamedullary nephrons they extend into the medullary portion of the kidney. The vasa recta is highly reduced or absent in the cortical nephrons because they have reduced loop of Henle.
