The correct answer is: To blow a blast of preheated air in to the furnace.
Near the base, the furnace is provided with pipes called tuyeres for supplying a hot blast of air, a tapping hole for molten iron and a slag hole through which slag flows out. There is an outlet near the top of the waste gases. Near the tuyeres, carbon burns to give carbon dioxide producing a lot of heat.
