The significance of meiosis :
1. It reduces the number of chromosomes to half in the daughter cells.
2. It is very essential phenomenon in the life cycle of sexually reproducing animals as it restores the fixed number of chromosomes present in the somatic cells, characteristic of the species.
3. Gametes are formed as a result of meiosis. Each gamete possesses half the number of chromosomes present in the somatic cells.
4. It avoids the multiplication of chromosomes and thus maintains the stability and constant number of chromosomes of the species.
5. During the crossing over exchange of nuclear material (genes) cause genetic variations within the species. As a result new combinations of hereditary material are formed.
