The response of plants to periods of day/night is termed as photoperiodism. The shoot apices cannot perceive the photoperiods. Leaves are the site of perception of light/dark. The photoperiodic stimulus is received by the leaves, as a result of which a flowering hormone is produced in them which is then transported to the apical tip, causing the initiation of floral primordia.
