Question: Answered & Verified by Expert
A 1.5×109 years old rock contains U238 which disintegrates to form Pb206. Assume that there was no lead in the rock initially and it is the only stable product formed by the decay. Calculate the ratio of the number of nuclei of lead to that of uranium. [Given, half-life of U238 =  4.5×109 years, 2131.26]

The correct answer is: 0.26

Let N0 be the initial number of uranium nuclei. After time t, let NU be the number of uranium nuclei and NPb be the number of lead nuclei.

The number of half-lives passed is

n=tThalf=1.5×1094.5×109=13

NU=N012n=N01213

NPb=N0-N01213
NPbNU=213-1=0.26
