Question: Answered & Verified by Expert
A student is performing the resonance column experiment using a tube of diameter 4 cm and a tuning fork of frequency 512 Hz. The air temperature is 38 °C in which the speed of sound is 336 m s-1. The zero of the meter scale coincides with the top end of the resonance column tube. When the first resonance occurs, the reading of the water level in the column is

The correct answer is: 15.2 cm
Let L=Length of air column

and e=end correction

L + e = λ 4

using v=fλ

λ=336512

=0.656 m

=65.6 cm

L=λ4-e e=0.3×diameter

L = λ 4 - e

=16.4-1.2=15.2 cm
