Question: Answered & Verified by Expert
A very broad elevator is going vertically upwards with a constant acceleration of 2 ms-2. At the instant when its velocity is 4 ms-1, a ball is projected from the floor of the lift with a speed of 4 ms-1 relative to the floor at an angle of 30°. The time of flight of the ball in the elevator is (g=10 ms-2)

The correct answer is: 13 s
Components of velocity of ball relative to lift are :

ux = 4 cos 30o = 2 3 m/s

and  uy=4 sin 30°=2 m/s

and acceleration of ball relative to lift is 12  m/s2 in negative y-direction or vertically downwards. Hence time of flight

T=2uy12=uy6=26=13 s
