Statement I: Fluorine has most negative electron gain enthalpy in its group.
Statement II: Oxygen has least negative electron gain enthalpy in its group.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate from the options given below.
Statement-1 is false because chlorine has most negative electron gain enthalpy in its group.
The size of fluorine is comparatively smaller due to which there exists force of repulsion between the valence electrons and they also repel the incoming electron but the size of chlorine is comparatively larger and it easily attains one electron to become stable
Thus, the electron gain enthalpy of chlorine is more negative than that of fluorine.
Oxygen has least negative electron gain enthalpy in its group, due to its small size. As a result of which the electron -electron repulsion in the relatively small p subshell are comparatively large and hence the incoming electrons are not accepted with the same ease in case of other elements of the group.
Hence option D is the answer.
