Potassium tetraiodo mercurate (II) ie, $\mathrm{K}_{2}\left[\mathrm{HgI}_{4}\right]$ dissolves in $\mathrm{KOH}$ solution to give Nessler's reagent. Nessler's reagent is used to test $\mathrm{NH}_{4}^{+}$ions.
