(i) Biomagnification is the ecological term used to describe the DDT accumulation at different trophic levels.
(ii) Calcium metabolism in birds is disturbed by high concentrations of DDT, which causes thinning of egg shell and their breaking prematurely, eventually causing decline in bird populations.
(iii) DDT accumulation can lead to eutrophication as well.
(iv) DDT increases the BOD which results in a decrease in dissolved oxygen in the water body.
(v) Minamata disease is caused by eating fish that has accumulated mercury, a heavy metal. It is characterised by diarrhoea, haemolysis, numbness, deafness, mental derangement, meningitis and death.
