Pneumatophores are extremely specialised aerial roots that stem out from a subterranean root system. They enable plants to utilise the air in waterlogged soil habitats. These roots are modified and show negative geotropism. These plants absorb oxygen from the air through their pneumatophores. The oxygen absorbed by the pneumatophores helps in the respiration of the underground tissues for their growth.
It is commonly found in mangrove species and are known as breathing roots.
