The inner membrane of Gram-negative bacteria process barrel-shaped membranous proteins called porins. These porins are hydrophilic in nature and facilitate the movement of aqueous solutions that are water soluble in and out of the cell. They respond to the surroundings by serving as a receptor sites for bacteriophages.
