Neutrophils
White blood cells are also known as leucocytes. There are two main groups of WBCs
(a) Agranulocytes (30\%)
(b) Granulocytes ( $70 \%)$
Granulocytes are made in the bone marrow but by the cells different from those that make red blood cells. These can be further subdivided into
(i) Neutrophils
(ii) Eosinophils
(iii) Basophils.
Neutrophils (phagocytes) make up about 70\% of the total number of granular WBCs. They commonly squeeze between the cells of the capillary walls and wander through the intercellular spaces. They are actively phagocytic which engulf and digest disease causing bacteria.
