In the majority of dicot plants, the root system is formed by the direct elongation of the radicle into the primary root. Branches of the primary root are called secondary roots. These in turn branch to form tertiary roots. The primary root and its branches constitute the taproot system.
Prop roots: In trees like the banyan and Indian rubber plant, many adventitious roots arise from the horizontal branches of the stem and grow vertically downwards. They become thick pillar-like and provide mechanical support to the huge trees.
Stilt/Fibrous roots: These are small roots growing obliquely from the basal nodes of the main stem. Like prop roots, they also provide mechanical support.
