Question: Answered & Verified by Expert
The shape and starch synthesis in pea seeds is controlled by one gene. Which among the following statements is/are correct for heterozygotes?

(i) Round seeds are due to the law of dominance while the size of the starch grain is due to the law of incomplete dominance.

(ii) Round seeds are due to the law of incomplete dominance while the size of the starch grain is due to the law of dominance.

(iii) Dominance is not an autonomous feature of a gene or the product that it has information for.

The correct answer is: Both (i) and (iii) are correct but (ii) is false
It was observed that the starch synthesis process and the shape of seed are controlled by a single gene. The gene showed two alleles namely, B and b. BB homozygotes combination resulted in large starch grains as compared to that produced by bb homozygotes. After maturation, it was observed that round seeds were expressed by BB condition and bb expressed wrinkled type. Crossing of these resulted in the progeny giving round seeds like that of homozygotes but the starch grain size was intermediate to both homozygotes type. The seed shape followed the Law of Dominance given by Mendel but the starch grain synthesis deviated from it resulting in incomplete dominance.
