Question: Answered & Verified by Expert

This question has Statement - I and Statement - II  of the four choices given after the Statements, choose the one that best describes the two Statements.

Statement - I: A point particle of mass m moving with speed ν collides with stationary point particle of mass M. If the maximum energy loss possible is given as
f12mν2 then f=mM+m.

Statement - II: Maximum energy loss occurs when the particles get stuck together as a result of the collision.

Options:
  • A Statement-I is true, Statement-II is false.
  • B Statement- I is false, Statement- II is true.
  • C Statement- I is true, Statement- II is true, Statement- II is a correct explanation of Statement- I .
  • D Statement- I is true, Statement- II is true, Statement- II is not a correct explanation of Statement- I .

The correct answer is: Statement- I is false, Statement- II is true.

Maximum energy loss will take place in perfectly inelastic collision, and is given by, K=P22m-P22m+M
K=P22m1-mm+M
K=P22mMm+M
K=12mv2Mm+M
On comparing with the given form of equation, we have, f=Mm+M

Hence Statement- I is false, Statement- II is true. ( As it is perfect Inelastic collision)
