Facultative anaerobes are organisms that can live in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, while obligate anaerobes are organisms that require anaerobic conditions to survive. Both facultative anaerobes and obligate anaerobes retain the enzymatic machinery to partially oxidise glucose (breakdown of glucose to pyruvic acid, called glycolysis) without the help of oxygen.
