The energy released during the electron system is utilized in synthesizing ATP with the help of ATP synthase enzyme (complex V). This complex consists of two major components: ${\mathrm{F}}_1$ and F0. For each ATP produced, 2H⁺ pass through ${\mathrm{F}}_0$ from the intermembrane space to the matrix down the electrochemical proton gradient.
