In secondary waste water treatment, microorganisms are involved in the breakdown of organic matter in waste water treatment. Thus, it is called biological treatment.
The primary effluent is passed into large aeration tanks where the organic matter present in it is consumed by aerobic microbes, which later themselves are digested by anaerobic bacteria and fungi in digesters with anaerobic sludge.
